How do I get Microsoft Office on my tablet for free?

You can access your free copy of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote and OneDrive) following the below steps:

  1. Login to your student email account on the device that you wish to install Microsoft Office on.
  2. Navigate to the Office 365 home page, and under Install Office, select 'Office 365 Apps'.
  3. A new window will open where you can select and install the operating system you require for your device/s.
  4. Once you see the message 'You're good to go' you can use Office.
  5. If prompted to sign in after the installation, please use your full USC email () instead of a product or license key.
  6. Although you can use the Microsoft applications offline, you will need to connect to the internet every 30 days for editing rights to remain active.

Please note, that although you can install Microsoft Office for free on up to 15 devices (including 5 Macs/PCs, 5 smart phones and 5 tablets), you are only able to install the applications on devices that you personally own.

Your student version of Microsoft Office is only available to use while you are a USC student, and although your installations of Microsoft Office will remain installed after you graduate, they will switch to read only mode. This means you will still be able to open and read all Office documents but you will be unable to edit them or create new ones.

If using OneDrive, you must remove all of your content out before you graduate. If you do not remove your content before then you will not be able to access it and it will be deleted.

If you're still having trouble, visit Install Office on your PC or Mac for more comprehensive installation instructions and tips (particularly useful if installing on a Mac).

*You are also able to use Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote online versions through your preferred browser if you do not wish to install the desktop apps via your Office 365 Portal (office.com).

Having Microsoft Office on your computer is almost essential these days. With this family of apps, you’ll be able to write and edit documents with Microsoft Word, create and organize spreadsheets with Excel, create slideshows and presentations with PowerPoint, and more. However, Microsoft Office typically costs $150 for a one-time installation, or between $70 and $100 a year for a subscription. If you’re not willing to spend that much, here are a few ways you can get Microsoft Office for free.

Use Microsoft Office for the Web

One of the easiest ways to get Microsoft Office for free is to use the online version. Also known as “Office for the web,” this free online office suite allows you to use Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and more.

While you won’t be able to access several advanced features, like Access and Publisher, Office for the web lets you take advantage of other interesting features. For instance, you’ll be able to share your documents with your teammates and work on them together in real-time.

You won’t need to install anything on your computer to use Office for the web, but you will need to have a reliable internet connection to access your files. That means you can access your work files using any web browser on any computer.

To get started with Office for the web, all you have to do is head over to Office.com using any web browser. Then log in with your Microsoft account and select the app you want to use.  If you don’t have a Microsoft account, you can create one for free, and you’ll also get 5GB of free storage on OneDrive.

Download the Microsoft Office Mobile App

Another easy way to get Microsoft Office for free is to download the Office mobile app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android device. This mobile app is free to use, and it comes with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint in one app. This means you’ll be able to create, edit, view, and share documents, presentations, and spreadsheets, without having to switch back and forth between apps.

In addition to these features, you’ll also be able to take advantage of several unique mobile features. For example, you can take a picture of a printed document and transform it into a digital Word or Excel file. Then you can edit the text in the app, add it to a PowerPoint presentation, and send it as an email attachment.

Then, you can get a Bluetooth keyboard and connect it to your device to make typing easier. This way, you won’t have to take your laptop with you when you go on vacation.

You can download the Office mobile app from the Apple App Store on your iPhone or iPad, or from the Google Play Store on an Android device. If you want to know more about the Microsoft Office app for iPhone and Android, check our previous article here.
