How to add multiple songs to a playlist on Apple Music

Question: Q: How do you add multiple songs to an existing playlist?

So, ya know how you used to be able to go into an existing playlist and there would be like a plus (+) button. You could click it, and then go around your Apple Music library and select songs to add to the playlist. I don’t see that anywhere anymore. I’m running iOS 14.2.1 and the only way that I can find to add music to a playlist, is to go into a specific song or album and select “Add to Playlist.” But I want to add multiple songs all at once. HELP!

Hello evandanielsson,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!

We understand from your post that you would like to add multiple songs to a playlist. Open the Music app and go to your Library. Then open your existing playlist. Tap the 3 dots in the upper right corner and then tap Edit. Then tap the green plus sign in front of Add Music. This will allow you to look for music under Listen Now, Browse, Library, or search for songs. Once you find the song(s) you want to add tap the red plus sign on the far right of the song. A red checkmark will appear and you can go choose another song(s).

Best Regards.

Question: Q: How Do I select multiple songs to add to a playlist?

Hi

I'm using itunes 12.9. I want to create some playlists.

I search for an artist

Select the artist in the result

select Top Songs -> See All

At this point I'd like to select multiple songs and add to my playlist. iTunes doesn't appear to allow multiple selection in this case. I've tried control click, command click, and shift click. each time I do this, the previously selected song is un selected and the new song is selected.

I haven't used iTunes in years, this use to be so simple , what has changed, or what am I missing?

Hi I_Rina,

Thanks for the reply. Normally those actions would work and in fact in iTunes they do when you are looking at your own library contents. However if you have apple music and let's say you want to create a playlist. You search for an artist. Then for that artist select popular songs(please note, none of these should be in your library already to see the issue). You will see you are on the browse tab. Now for those songs try to select multiple using the actions you describe using command click or shift click, none of these work. I've attached a screen shot so you can see exactly where I am in the app. Please follow these steps and you'll see what I am talking about. I also spent time on the phone last night with apple support and they confirmed this behaviour for some bizarre reason is by design. It makes it very cumbersome to create playlists. You have to basically find everything , add it to your library, switch to your library, then you finally get multi select. To me it's a horrible "feature"

With regard to your suggestion on the sidebar, this only helps, again if I've added the songs to my library already. The whole point of what I am trying to do is simply create playlists. I don't see why I have to add everything to my library to get decent functionality. I've used spotify and amazon music and both allow you to do this simply.

Thanks

Hello brewsterw,

Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities. I see you're unable to select multiple songs in iTunes for Mac.

You should be able to use either Command + Click, or Shift + Click to select songs as you described. If you hold Command while you click on a song, you can pick multiple non-sequential songs, and holding Shift while you click would let you select a group in sequence.

If this isn't working for you, you might double-check where you are within the iTunes app. Instead of searching, try clicking "Library" at the top of iTunes first. Then, click the View menu and make sure the Sidebar is showing (if needed, you can click Show Sidebar). Then, from the Sidebar on the left, click "Songs" and see if you can use either Command + Click or Shift + Click here.

I hope this helps get you started.

Cheers.

I love making new playlists to groove out to, but the last thing I want is to have to add each song individually. Instead, when I want to quickly add tracks on my Mac, I use keyboard shortcuts to get the job done. Here's how to do it.

The Songs view can be found under the Library tab in iTunes. Your first song should be selected. If you want to select multiple discrete songs, hold down Command while holding down Shift. If you want to select a bunch of songs in a row, hold down Shift while holding down the last song.
