1 user is having trouble opening pptx files in powerpoint 2010. They can open ppt files fine. If I open powerpoint and go to file -> open and select the pptx file, it works fine however when I double click the file nothing happens. If I right click on the file and go to open with, powerpoint is not listed. All windows updates are installed.
any ideas?

That seems to have your issue. Try "winword.exe /r" from a run prompt as that re-registers all extensions in Office 2010. Also, follow the instructions on that site. This seems to be a common issue on the community lately. I wonder if a security update or something for Office 2010 went out causing issues. Try also removing all Office 2010 updates that are recent if this is a recent problem.
Thanks,
A.J.
This may be a stupid response but is it a file association issue? did you try to re associate the file?

It is most likely just a file association, but AJ's method will work to re-register everything.
Haha, maybe I should read before I post, thanks for brining that to my attention :]
file association for pptx is set to microsoft office client virtualization handler. I can't find powerpoint in program files
The shortcut for powerpoint is pointing to:
"C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\Virtualization Handler\CVH.EXE" "Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 9014006204090000"
ok, turns out this is something called MS Office Click2Run which is why it's not working properly. only solution is to remove it and install office from another exe/msi file
I had a similar issue I still have not been able to resolve.

I am going to check this click to run setting though.

I have removed office click2run and installed the normal version without any issues ;]
Good morning Guys, I have having the same problem and I have tried this work around and it worked for me:
- Start PowerPoint 2010.
- On the File tab, click Options,
- then Trust Center, then the Trust Center Settings button.
- Next, click Protected View and uncheck "Enable protected view for files originating from the Internet" and click
- OK.
