Best Cool-Toned Gloss

Kevin Murphy Crystal Angel Illuminating Treatment

$32 AT AMAZON $33 AT WALMART

Ideal for crystal blonde, ash blonde, brown, and grey hair, this three- to five-minute treatment has a blend of grey pigments that deposit slate and cool tones—plus tons of lustrous shine—in between salon appointments. Side note: How chic is the packaging?

THE REVIEWS: "Tried this to see if anything could get my gray hair shiny. It is the first product to do exactly that," says one reviewer. "I first bought it from my hairdresser, then quickly ordered more from Amazon. Try this. You'll be glad you did."

Best Gloss for Flyways

John Frieda Luminous Color Glaze Clear Shine

This clear gloss—which is suitable for all hair colors—works double-time to boost shine and smooth flyaways to create a silky finish. One reviewer even shared that she got compliments on the results after just one use: "I went to pick up an order at a local grocery store. The clerk brought my order out and when she addressed me, she said, 'Your hair is gorgeous'... Looks like I need a gallon now!"

THE REVIEWS: "So if you want your hair shining bright like a diamond, you need to try this," one tester writes. "I promise you that you will not be disappointed."

Best Gloss for Brassy Hair

Rita Hazan Ultimate True Color Shine Gloss

$26 AT AMAZON $13 AT WALMART

Though it won't completely replace a toner if your box dye was kind of a fail—or if your colorist took some, uh, creative liberties—this in-shower foam will continue to neutralize brassy tones and break down orange hues, post-color.

THE REVIEWS: "I’ve been fighting gold hair for about 18 months. Not only did this get rid of some of the muddy root colors that I ended up with, but it also brightened my gold highlights," writes one reviewer.

Best Gloss for Heat Protection

My Hair My Canvas Glow For It Universal Gloss

$26 AT ULTA BEAUTY $16 AT WALMART $26 AT MACY'S

Thanks to vegan botanical caviar and prickly pear oil, this serum will provide environmental and heat protection, add shine, and smooth hair—without weighing it down. One reviewer called it "the best serum I've ever used" adding, "it never gets oily or heavy and smells great."

THE REVIEWS: "My hair is between medium and thick with minimum frizz. I typically use this before I straighten my hair and it gives it a really nice shine," says one tester. "It makes my hair feel smooth and silky."

Best Gloss for Curly Hair

Bread Beauty Supply Hair Oil Everyday Gloss

$24 AT SEPHORA $24 AT JCPENNEY

Infused with hydrating Kakadu plum, this oil-gloss hybrid leaves curly and coily hair looking soft, shiny, and sleek when applied after styling. It won't refresh color, but it will work wonders on damage, breakage, and split ends!

THE REVIEWS: "I have very very thick hair that gets frizzy like a lion's mane. I use this oil after I've heat-styled my hair to tame the frizz, and I use it on second/third-day hair. It's truly a magical hair oil," writes one reviewer. "When applied after styling, I use three to four drops (on thick, mid-back length hair) and the oil leaves my hair looking soft, shiny, and sleek."

Best Hair Gloss for Brunettes

Pureology Color Fanatic Top Coat + Tone Gloss in Blue

$35 AT SEPHORA $35 AT ULTA BEAUTY

Sure, all hair glosses tone to some degree, but this one is seriously magical for brunettes thanks to blue pigments that minimize orange tones in brown hair (it's similar to how a blue shampoo works). The color-correcting and shine-boosting effects last for up to eight washes too, BTW.

THE REVIEWS: "This product is amazing! Completely took brassiness out of my platinum blonde hair and left it soft and shiny. I was looking for something a bit more powerful than a purple shampoo/conditioner since my bangs tend to get brassy faster than the rest of my hair. I just used it for a second time on my whole head of hair, and it worked wonderfully," writes one tester. "My hair looks as bright as it does when I first leave the salon. If you are platinum looking for a boost between appointments..this is the answer! Better than purple shampoo/conditioners."

Best Hair Gloss for Blondes

Madison Reed Color Reviving Gloss in Crema

$30 AT ULTA BEAUTY $30 AT BED BATH AND BEYOND

Ash-blonde, honey blonde, platinum blonde—really any shade of blonde can benefit from using this at-home hair gloss. It's infused with violent tones to brighten your color and cancel out unwanted yellowing—plus it majorly amps up your hair's natural shine too.

THE REVIEWS: "Love the gloss, easy and impossible to mess up!! No harsh smells and no irritation," one reviewer says.

Best In-Shower Hair Glaze

L'Oréal EverPure Glossing In Shower Acidic Glaze

After shampooing, spray this hair glaze evenly all over wet hair, leave it on for up to three minutes, layer on your conditioner, and then rinse. It'll help balance your hair's pH levels so it looks ridiculously soft and shiny once you hop out of the shower.

THE REVIEWS: "I have been using this shampoo, conditioner, and the glaze spray for the last several weeks and they have brightened up my dull hair. My hair has been dyed and is in bad need of recoloring, but this combination has brought some life back to my hair." one tester writes. "It makes my hair soft and easy to style. The combo is easy to use and nourishing for your hair. I will definitely continue to use."

Best Hair Gloss Serum

Color Wow Pop + Lock Frizz Control + Glossing Serum

Think of this hair serum as a two-second gloss that you can use on your hair anytime, anywhere. Just smooth a tiny bit over your mid-lengths and ends to add shine, boost color vibrancy, and protect your dye job from fading.

THE REVIEWS: "I've been using this for a long time now, and it's a must-have for me. I have a lot of little unruly hairs that do not cooperate when I have my hair up. This smooths them and holds my style very well," writes one reviewer. "It also does protect from heat damage as well, which is a huge plus. It's fantastic for flat-ironing."

THE REVIEWS: "I have long waist-length hair and deal with a lot of tangles. I have tried every hair mask I can think of—and while nourishing, they did nothing for tangles," one reviewer says."I keep coming back to this product, as it's the only one that allows me to slide a comb through my hair after washing it. For the tangles alone, this product is a huge win for me."

Best Hair Glaze Mask

THE REVIEWS: "I’m a natural redhead but as I’ve aged, my color has faded a bit. This brightens it, and it looks like my natural color," writes one tester. "It's easier to maintain and less expensive than getting my hair colored at the salon. Leaves my hair feeling healthy and looking great."

Best Strengthening Hair Gloss

Kérastase Chroma Absolu High Shine Gloss Treatment

Since it's clear, this high-shine strengthening gloss can be used with virtually every type of color-treated hair. Key ingredients like lactic acid seal around the hair's surface to extend the life of your expensive post-salon results. It'll save ya some serious cash in the long run, trust me!

THE REVIEWS: "This product made a huge difference in my hair. It feels softer and looks shinier. Comparable to a salon treatment," one reviewer writes. "I have fine, but thick, color treated hair. As I’ve aged, my hair has lost moisture and shine. This product really has been amazing!"

Best Color-Correcting Hair Gloss

Christophe Robin Shade Variation Mask

$53 AT SEPHORA $53 AT NORDSTROM $53 AT SKINSTORE

These at-home hair gloss treatment masks (there’s one for baby blondes, golden blondes, redheads, warm brunettes, and cool brunettes) are ideal for anyone who needs to revive their existing hair color while amplifying shine. Each mask contains conditioners (like shea butter, almond oil, and buriti oil) plus a shade-correcting tint to counteract brassiness, dullness, oxidation, and more.

THE REVIEWS: "I have strawberry blonde hair and this is perfect to cover my grey hairs temporarily and boost color. I leave it on for about an hour or so when I have time," one reviewer writes."My hair is so soft, has a richer color, and my grey is temporarily covered. I’ve bought this three times and will buy more."

Best Leave-In Hair Glaze

Living Proof Color Care Whipped Glaze

$29 AT SEPHORA $26 AT WALMART $29 AT QVC

Think of this whipped glaze (there are two kinds: one for darker hair tones and one for lighter hair tones) as a souped-up leave-in conditioner. It refreshes your hair color, protects it from dulling, hard-water mineral buildup, and shields it from UV damage, which can mess with your color and cause and breakage. Just work it through clean, towel-dried hair and then style as usual.

THE REVIEWS: "Must-have for blondes. I'm on my second bottle," says one tester. "It has a light lavender scent that isn’t overbearing, and the mousse texture doesn’t leave hair greasy."

Best Fast-Acting Hair Gloss

Amika Flash Instant Shine Hair Gloss Mask

$25 AT SEPHORA $26 AT WALMART

This at-home hair gloss mask is for anyone who refuses to spend more than 60 seconds refreshing their color and boosting their shine. It’s all thanks to a fast-acting combo of amino acids, flax seed, and antioxidants, which revive natural and color-treated hair in literally one minute.

THE REVIEWS: "What a rare find! I have coarse, wavy, unruly hair. Shine is a thing of the past due to chemical processing. I have tried everything and I don’t typically write reviews but I had to because I truly have tried it all and nothing compares or ever works anymore," one tester writes. "My friend sent this as a bday gift. I’m now ordering three more. It really worked for me. Love it."

Best Single-Use Hair Gloss

Pantene Nutrient Blends Illuminating Color Care Glossing Rescue Shots

Bleached and color-treated hair tends to be damaged, which is where this glossing “shot” comes into play. The single-use treatment is packed with biotin—a vitamin that’s essential for strong, healthy hair—to give your hair a ton of shine and your color (whether it’s golden blonde or dark brown) an instant refresh.

THE REVIEWS: "Wow! This works! I didn't think it would do much because I've tried so many products with minimal effect. My hair was damaged and large sections were broken off after getting a keratin treatment at the salon," writes one reviewer. "I read tons of reviews and several different products and this one is great. My hair is smooth and shiny and I will be using this regularly for sure!!

At-home hair glosses and glazes (the terms are used interchangeably in the hair world, FYI) are basically fancy words for hair toners, or products that refresh and adjust your hair color, says Felicia Dosso, lead colorist at Nunzio Saviano Salon in NYC. "And unlike bleach or dye, glosses are ammonia-free, so they won't damage or dry out your hair.

"In general, the professional glosses and glazes that you get at the salon are the best option (your colorist will know the exact color and formula to use and how long it should be left on your hair), but when used correctly, at-home glosses and glazes are a great option too, says Dosso.

"These two are extremely similar," Meri Kate O'Connor, a celebrity colorist and stylist at Cooper in West Hollywood explains. "A gloss typically lasts 2-4 weeks, whereas a glaze can last up to a week. But they're both good for people who want to try something new without commitment."

  • Amplify certain tones, like blonde, copper, or brown, depending on the formula you use.
  • Tone down brassiness (aka the orangey-yellow hue that usually creeps in a few weeks after bleaching or dyeing your hair).
  • Restore shine with a mix of conditioning and smoothing ingredients.

Technically no, hair glosses and glazes won't cover grays (you'll need real box dye or a single process at the salon to fully hide them), but you can "stain" them by using a gloss. "On clients who have minimal gray hair, I will sometimes leave a gloss on for up to 30 minutes so that the grays are more camouflaged. Staining them won’t give you 100 percent coverage, but it can make gray hair almost look like a very subtle highlight," says Dosso.

If your lightened hair or highlights are looking a little brassy (think warm orange or golden tones), choose a hair gloss or glaze that’ll neutralize them by depositing cool-toned pigments. And hi, brunettes with unwanted warm tones, you can use these too!

Or, if you've got dull dark hair, revive your color with a warm gloss like Christophe Robin's Shade Variation Mask in warm chestnut, which deposits rich chocolate tones. And redheads whose color isn't reaching its potential will love Garnier Nutrisse's Color Reviver Mask for a more vibrant color in just five minutes.

Decide if shine is important to you

We've also got a few clear options on this list. So if you don't color your hair—but still feel like it could use a little zhuzh—choose a shine-enhancing or smoothing hair gloss.
